Pregnancy and geriatric alerts.  Special considerations must be made for pregnant and elderly patients when writing a prescription. Alerts will be triggered if a medication is selected and has a risk for these specific conditions.

Comprehensive managed care formularies from Medimedia. A formulary is a list of prescription drugs covered by a particular drug benefit plan.
Medicare Part D formularies.  Medicare Part D beneficiaries is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare in the United States. Medicare Part D formularies will help your doctors prescribe efficiently for their Medicare patients.

Medicare Incentive
Section 132 of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) authorizes a new and separate incentive program for eligible professionals who are successful electronic prescribers (e-Prescribers) as defined by MIPPA.  The program began January 1, 2009 and provides incentives for eligible professionals who are "successful e-prescribers".  For more information about the Medicare e-prescribing incentive program you can download the "Medicare's Practical Guide to the E-prescribing Incentive Program" or visit the e-prescribing incentive program information page at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/ERXIncentive/

The incentive amounts are as follows for a successful e-prescriber:
Year Increase in amount of total allowed charges for covered professional services

2009 2.0%
2010 2.0%

2011 1.0%
2012 1.0%
2013 0.5%


The penalties begin to apply in 2012 as follows:

WHO CAN E-PRESCRIBE

Each prescribing professional will be considered an individual user.

In general, an eligible professional is one of the following:

    •  Physical or occupational therapist
    •  Qualified speech-language pathologist     
    •  Nurse practitioner
    •  Physician assistant
    •  Clinical nurse specialist
    •  Certified registered nurse anesthetist     
    •  Certified nurse midwife     
    •  Clinical social worker
    •  Clinical psychologist
    •  Registered dietitian
    •  Nutrition professional
    •  Qualified audiologist  (as of 2009)
